In Thailand, the extreme heat has been causing car windows to shatter unexpectedly, even in the shade. The issue emerged after viral images of a shattered car window circulated online. Jessada Denduangboripant from Chulalongkorn University notes that while heat can break the tempered glass in car windows, factors like sudden temperature shifts, existing minor damages, or impacts from falling objects also play roles. He advises parking in shaded areas, using high-quality window films, and regularly inspecting vehicles to prevent such incidents.

Thailand is preparing for the potential arrival of up to 100,000 refugees due to escalating violence in Myanmar, where an uprising against the military junta is intensifying, with several towns and military posts falling to anti-junta forces. The Thai Foreign Affairs Minister, Parnpree Bahiddha-nukara, announced this ahead of a Cabinet meeting focused on the crisis. These developments mark the most significant challenge to the Myanmar military since it seized power in 2021. Thai Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin emphasized the importance of the situation for Thailand and is advocating for peace talks, especially as the junta's hold appears to be weakening. This comes as Thailand, sharing a long border with Myanmar, seeks to mediate and has provided humanitarian aid to foster dialogue.

On Thursday, April 11, from 4 pm to 8 pm, parts of Ratchadamnoen Klang and Mahachai roads in Bangkok's Phra Nakhon district were closed to traffic for the Songkran Festival celebrations. The closure facilitated the Maha Songkran World Water Festival 2024, which is running from April 11-15. The opening ceremony was held at the Maha Chetsadabodin Pavilion Court. The road closures have created a long pedestrian zone from Mahakan Fort to Democracy Monument on Ratchadamnoen Klang Road and from Samran Rat Intersection to Mahakan Fort on Mahachai Road, where people can partake in the traditional water-splashing festivities that mark Thailand’s new year. Additional Songkran activities are being hosted at 118 venues across the city.

As Thailand approached the Songkran holiday, there was concern among road safety advocates about a potential increase in road accidents beyond the designated "seven dangerous days," which started on April 13 and will continue until April 15. These days typically see the highest number of road accidents. The Royal Thai Police (RTP) prepared for a 3.1% increase in travelers from last year and aimed to reduce accidents by 5% during this period. An Accident Control Operation Centre was set up to bolster law enforcement and driver safety. Despite these efforts, there was worry about the rise in accidents both before and after these days, highlighted by a significant increase in fatalities compared to last year. There were also concerns that extended holiday plans could lead to prolonged heavy road use, increasing accident risks further.

To enhance security during the Songkran Fest 2024 on Khao San Road, the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) is collaborating with police and utilizing about 500 security cameras, including 22 AI-equipped cameras, to detect and prevent criminal activities like pickpocketing. Announced at a press conference involving key local figures and stakeholders, these measures aim to ensure a safe environment for the festival-goers from Saturday to Monday. The setup includes monitoring for overcrowding and clearly marked emergency exits. Additionally, some 1,000 personnel, including police officers and medical staff, are present each day. This heightened security strategy is part of efforts to boost tourist confidence and promote safe celebrations across 118 locations in Bangkok, contributing positively to the city's tourism.
