Russian man arrested in Phuket for teaching riding illegally

A 29-year-old Russian man, Roman Lazarev, was arrested in Phuket for teaching motorbike riding illegally without a work permit. Police detained Lazarev in Kathu after discovering he was offering motorbike lessons through Instagram. They found him instructing a Russian woman and discovered cones used for training. The woman had paid 2,000 baht for a three-day course. Lazarev was taken to Kathu Police Station and charged. Police noted other foreigners were also providing similar services online.

Thailand’s tourist boom: Portuguese visitors surge by 44% this year

Thailand has seen a 44% increase in Portuguese tourists between January and April 2024. The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) aims to exceed the pre-pandemic record of 52,000 Portuguese visitors by year-end, supported by promotional efforts like the Thailand Festival in Lisbon. Thailand has been ranked among the top 50 countries in the World Happiness Report 2024, placing 45th overall and second in Asia, following Taiwan. The report, based on data from 2021-2022, considers factors such as GDP per capita, social support, and life expectancy. The ranking highlights Thailand's appeal as a destination for young people, boosted by government policies supportive of youth, including the recent Marriage Equality Bill. Hair-raising arrest in Koh Pha Ngan: Swiss stylist snips rules

A 51-year-old Swiss hairstylist, Oliver Ehrat, was arrested on Koh Phangan for working illegally as a barber at his shop, Oliver Twist Hair. Despite holding a permit as the Managing Director of Oliver Twist Art Co., Ltd., he was found providing hairstyling services, which is a profession reserved for Thai citizens. The arrest followed a police investigation initiated by reports of his unauthorized work. Ehrat faces legal proceedings at Koh Phangan Police Station.

A minor earthquake with a magnitude of 2.2 struck Phang Nga Province's Bang Toei area early on June 26, 2024. The tremor prompted officials to conduct safety inspections, although no damage or injuries have been reported. Scammers target Thai parents with fake police calls about children

Scammers are targeting Thai parents with fake police calls, claiming their children are involved in criminal activities. A mother of a four-year-old girl received such a call, alleging her daughter was linked to a money laundering case. The caller abruptly ended the call when questioned. This incident has raised concerns about the security of personal information, especially as the mother recalled providing details for a school-arranged life insurance policy. Parents are advised to stay vigilant and protect their children's information.

Foreigner’s key theft at Chon Buri hotel unlocks social media storm

A foreign man, previously a guest at a Chon Buri hotel, stole a key and stayed overnight without permission. Despite hotel staff calling the police, no officers arrived until the next day when Immigration Bureau officers apprehended him. The incident, shared on social media, showed the hotel owner confronting the man on a balcony, demanding he leave. The foreigner, known as Sam, is set to be deported

Stinging situation as Bluebottles sighted around Racha Islands

Tourists visiting the Racha Islands near Phuket are warned to be cautious due to the presence of the Portuguese Man o' War, also known as bluebottles. The Department of Marine and Coastal Resources (DMCR) identified these dangerous jellyfish at Ao La, Ao Tu, and Racha Yai Islands after a tour boat staff member was stung and experienced breathing difficulties. The DMCR advises using vinegar to treat stings and avoiding fresh water. Immediate medical attention is essential.

AirAsia operates flights between Kuala Lumpur and Chiang Rai

AirAsia has launched a new direct route from Kuala Lumpur to Chiang Rai, starting November 2, with flights available three times a week on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. To celebrate, the airline is offering free seats for the inaugural flights, covering the base fare but excluding taxes and fees. Additionally, a 15% discount on flights to over 130 destinations is available for bookings made from June 27 to June 30, valid for travel between July 8, 2024, and March 20, 2025.
