New Proposal to Grant Thai Citizenship to Migrant Workers' Children

Credit to: Thai PBS World

WThe research director of the Thailand Research Development Institute (TDRI), Dr Somchai Jitsuchon, has suggested a new approach to increase Thailand's decreasing birth rates. He proposed giving Thai citizenship to children of migrant workers and ethnic minorities. This would give around one million children equal rights to access education, healthcare, and other services in the country.

Despite current laws allowing them to become citizens, many face obstacles due to bureaucracy. They are often left without proper identification or registration status, which also excludes them from official census data. Sivanut Soithong from the Mirror Foundation supports this proposal as it could help these children overcome challenges they currently face.

Bangkok Takes Steps to Protect Tourists from Overcharging

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) has introduced five new ways to protect tourists from being overcharged by tuk tuks, taxis and shops. The plans involve using artificial intelligence for surveillance, issuing trust stickers to businesses that promise fair prices, working with other government groups to stop people taking advantage of tourists, encouraging the public to report unfair behaviour and providing help for tourists through helplines and guidebooks. These strategies will be first used in the Ratchaprasong area before expanding into other parts of Bangkok.

Thai Woman Donates Gold to Temple After Land Sale

A Thai woman, after successfully selling her previously unsellable land, made a grand gesture of gratitude by donating gold necklaces, bracelets and rings to a revered statue at Wat Sawang Arom in Nakhon Pathom. The 20 rai (32,000 square metres) piece of land in Trat province had been difficult to sell due to poor conditions and frequent flooding but was sold for 1.5 million baht (US$41,776). The woman also brought various food items as offerings and entrusted the gold for safekeeping at the temple.

DESTINATION OF THE DAY
Bangkok

Bangkok, often referred to as 'the Big Mango', is a vibrant city that attracts more tourists than any other city in the world. It offers an exciting mix of historical and religious sites, such as temples with stunning architecture and significant history. Tourists can also enjoy various palaces, museums, parks and shopping centres ranging from local markets to luxury department stores. The city's food scene is remarkable with options for both street food and high-end dining experiences. Known for its lively nightlife, Bangkok offers nightclubs, cabarets or even exotic red-light districts for the adventurous ones.

Despite seeming chaotic due to its lack of a distinct centre, it's easy to navigate around if you stay near a BTS Skytrain or MRT station. You'll get a taste of local life by visiting areas like Chinatown or the Dusit district which offer unique cultural experiences.
